Happy April Fool's Day
Posted by Michael Klassen on April 1, 2008
Morning radio shows all love to get into the game now of spoofing the public on April Fool's Day, including CBC Radio One where a Senator inexplicably leaves his gold-plated-pension lifestyle for the rough and tumble of civic politics. Yawn.
CKNW did an even more lame spoof around developing Lost Lagoon. It was so transparent that this was a spoof that only the blue hairs called the station in protest. If you really want to go to town on the Lost Lagoon idea, how about building a Casino on the lake? Or re-opening the lagoon to Coal Harbour and have a marina there? Start an Aqua Bus service across the pond with loud motorized boats that run until midnight? If you're going to start a controversy give it some pizazz, for Pete's sake.
You want a good gag, listen to what we did on Z95 (now Crave) on April 1st, 1994 (audio re-posted below). We got a lot of people really pissed that morning, which is the whole point of AFD, don't you think?

This old bit done by myself and J.B. Shayne at Coast 1040 Radio (our Hollywood North Report) seems fitting for tonight's Academy Awards broadcast. Click the audio player below to listen.
Hope the ODEO streaming works. If not I'll post the MP3. Enjoy!

The All-Canadian Walk of Fame
Posted by Michael Klassen on November 23, 1993
It must be pointed out that this hair-brained idea, the All-Canadian Walk of Fame, cleverly spoofed in this radio play which aired on CBC Radio in 1993, came well before the REAL Canadian Walk of Fame in Toronto.
Script by Michael Klassen & J.B. Shayne
Performed by J.B. Shayne, Michael Klassen and Gord Tanner. Aired on "Brand X" CBC Radio One.
Some of the Canadian celebrities mentioned in the program - John Candy, Bruno Gerussi, Barbara Frum, all alive during the original airing - have since left us. No disrespect was intended by including their names.
