Congratulations, Jay Triano!

Jay Triano

Not many guys in Canada have done more for hoops than BC's Jay Triano. Jay is a true leader in Canadian sport. It's probably only a matter of time before he gets an Order of Canada pinned on his chest by the Gov. General.

Jay was recently appointed head coach of the Toronto Raptors, and won the first game in that position.

Vancouverites who followed the lowly Vancouver Grizzlies franchise will remember Jay's role as both team booster and colour commentator to golden-throated Don Poier, who died tragically in 2005 of a heart attack.

Jay and Don were the heart and soul of our short-lived NBA team, which packed up when BC's economy tanked and the Canadian Dollar went into the dumper.

I'd really love to see professional hoops back in Vancouver, possibly managed by BC golden boy Steve Nash, after he retires. I might be dreaming, though.

Good guys like Steve and Jay are a rare breed. And although Don Poier was an American, he was beloved by Vancouver hoops fans and treated as one of ours. Don was a true example of class in sports broadcasting. If someone has not already erected some kind of small monument to Don in Vancouver, they should.
